Austin resources LGBTQ+ youth can turn to as 988 specialized service shuts down.
From the article:
Thursday marked the official end of a national specialized crisis service for LGBTQ+ youth. This comes after the Trump administration ordered the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, 988, to end the service.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, which manages the 988 service, announced in a press release last month that it would βno longer silo LGB+ youth services β¦ to focus on serving all help seekers.β

Meals on Wheels facing challenges as federal funding tightens.
From the article:
The nonprofit has been delivering hot meals to homebound seniors since 1972, largely supported by the Older Americans Act. Meals on Wheels Central Texas CEO Henry Van de Putte said that while OAA funding remained unchanged, rising costs will effectively result in a 5% to 7% decrease.
Initially, the organization projected delivering between 3,000 and 5,000 meals daily to Central Texans. Now, those numbers are being scaled back to around 2,300 to 2,400 meals per day.
βIt will create some weight. Unfortunately, it's it's inevitable at this point,β said Van de Putte. βAnd so our goal is to put our hands around the most vulnerable, the folks who are most impacted, and make sure that we can see them through this, this time.β
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson visited Meals on Wheels and voiced his support, emphasizing the need for collaboration at the federal and state levels as the city faces its own funding setbacks.

As Austin ISD prepares for the next school year, federal funding is up in the air. Note: not just Austin ISD.
From the article:
Austin ISD will need to figure out which programs it can maintain after the Trump administration announced at the end of June it was withholding more than $6 billion in federal grants to schools nationwide. βThere is going to be an impact," Superintendent Matias Segura told reporters Tuesday. "Without a doubt, there are things that we will not be able to do moving forward that we currently have been doing.β
Segura said the district, which has an estimated $19.7 million budget deficit this year, expected to get about $9.6 million from the U.S. Department of Education. That money, he said, helps pay for 109 positions that are primarily based at schools. In some cases, those federal dollars cover an entire salary; in other cases, they fund part of a position.
βNow, in a relatively short period of time, we have to go through and make some decisions about what we can support [and] what needs to change,β he said.

Surfing dogs hit Galveston Beach for a cause at the 12th Annual Ohana Surf Dog Competition
Tail-wagging action, community activities, and a cause that reaches beyond the beach.
From the article:
Surfboards, sun, and four-legged athletes will take over the beach this weekend as the 12th Annual Ohana Surf Dog Competition returns to Galveston Island.
The event, hosted by the Galveston Island Humane Society (GIHS), kicks off at 7:30 a.m. and runs until noon on Saturday, July 19, at 27th Street Beach. Organizers say the event not only brings together pet lovers and beachgoers but also raises money to help care for homeless and neglected animals on the island.
